Hyundai is exploring a new direction with its formation of the New Horizons Studio. To this end, the company recently appointed some top Silicon Valley leaders to spearhead a new project, which will focus on developing Ultimate Mobility Vehicles (UMVs). The company’s goal is to create vehicles that can drive to locations that were once thought to be impossible.
The Hyundai Elevate
The Hyundai Elevate is the first vehicle concept that New Horizons Studio is developing. The Elevate will not only rely on wheels; possibilities such as robotic legs open up a new range of capabilities for the UMV.
Hyundai Vice President Dr. John Suh is leading the project. Since 2011, Dr. Suh has held many leadership positions at Hyundai, serving as founding director of Hyundai Ventures and spearheading Hyundai CRADLE (Center for Robotic-Augmented Design in Living Experiences). His time spent thinking outside the box made him a perfect candidate to captain the team.
Ultimate Mobility Vehicle
Dr. Suh articulated the simplicity of the mission. “We aim to create the world’s first transformer-class vehicle, also known as the Ultimate Mobility Vehicle.”
Dr. Ernestine Fu is joining the team as Director of Product Management. She has directed research on the interactions between human-operated vehicles and autonomous vehicles at Stanford University, proving her abilities in the field.
