There is no denying Americans love for pickup trucks. In fact, pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicles in the country. However, there is an empty spot in the pickup lineup with no compact pickups currently available. This segment effectively disappeared decades ago. Hyundai is hoping to fill that void with a new pickup for 2020 or 2021.
The Santa Cruz
The Hyundai pickup model is expected to be called the Santa Cruz. Hyundai first showed off a pickup concept at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. While it was originally just intended as an exercise in styling, its popularity led to serious development.
Hyundai is aiming its new truck at what it describes as “Urban Adventurers.” These people will most likely be young and perhaps buying their first vehicle on their own. Like previous generations of compact pickups, the Hyundai model hopes to stand out from a crowded market of big trucks and SUVs.
The concept truck came with a versatile bed-extender feature that would be great to see on the production. It worked somewhat like a drawer and when fully extended, you could fit a motorcycle in the bed. When pushed it, the Santa Cruz is only about as long as an average sedan.
Here at The Duell’s Evansville Hyundai, we are excited to see whether this reported Hyundai pickup truck becomes a reality. Until then, check out our current line-up of Hyundai vehicles!
